Edmund Blanket invented the blanket in 1884. In St Stephen's Church, close to Bristol city centre, there's a famous medieval tomb with two well-worn carved figures on the top. These are generally thought to represent cloth merchant Edmund Blanket and his wife. One very cold night, Leech relates, he and his wife were shivering in their bed covered only by a coverlet of goat hair. His wife then knitted a blanket.
